Kitties and doggies and lizards, oh my!

We're just a wee bit away from officially announcing our next competition, so we figured what the heck - might as well tell the ten people who read our blog what's about to happen. Interested? Read on.

Our next competition will be all about PETS - specifically, making your favorite pet photos into funny, witty birthday cards. (This is your chance to make little Fifi a greeting card superstar.) We'll be accepting submissions for three weeks starting 1/14.

Start digging - or scanning - through your pet photos for something that would work during the summer months, would be amusing to people other than those who know you and your pet well, and that can either be cropped to about 3"x3" or be a vertical 4"x6" image. And start thinking about what your pet in said picture might want to say about birthdays (in general or as a wish to a particular sort of someone). (You know they're thinking SOMETHING.)

We're excited about this next one. (And we're still waiting with bated breath to find out which of our (RED) finalists will become the Grand Prize Winner from that competition -- only a few days away now -- last day to vote is 1/10.)

OK. So that was behind-the-scenes. For real. (Aren't you glad you're one of the ten who read this thing?) (We are.)

It's "bated breath" not baited. Unless you've been snacking on worms and minnows. :-P

What are the rules, can anyone participate? How do you submit a entry? It would be nice to see a rules section.

Oops. Will change "baited" - thanks. And as for rules, check out our FAQ's on our site: hallmark.com/you. Stay tuned for a whole lot more detail coming Monday. You go ahead and wait with bated or baited breath. ;)

OMG - I am so excited about this one! You see, I have been working on a greeting card line already, and I only take pictures of little animals for them. I have discs upon discs of pics! I hope we can enter more than one!

PS: I am sure MORE people than 10 read the blog! LOL...More like 100's if not more? We shall see by the entries you get. I am sure it will be QUITE a task! But I think everyone has just been waiting with "baited" breath..LOL.for the next contest, so now the responses will go UP!

I take it that the photo has to be of the submitter's pet, not just a generic humorous pet photo gleaned from the internet. That being the case, I'm wondering how Hallmark will be able to verify that the animal in question is indeed the photographer's pet. If it doesn't have to be the "pet", then this opens up a whole realm of possibilities and I will be able to submit photos of my 7 pet giraffes.

Anyone confirm/deny?

If you have 7 pet giraffes? That in itself is side splitting! LOL...

Not to speak for the judges, but I personally don't believe it has to be "your" pet. I believe any animal that can be a pet, that may not be your own pet, can still be used.

hmmm I think it should be YOUR pet just because of the fact that the grand prize includes a photo shoot of YOUR pet.
Good luck to all pets are so naturally funny

Okay, you hot dogs. Thanks for testing us. :)

We've clarified our definition of pets (and Mello, you raise a great point - who wants to take their neighbor's pet on a professional photo shoot?). And bigpeeler, you also raise a solid question (and if you have raised 7 giraffes, well good for you.)

Anyway, here you all go (from our FAQs):

What is the definition of a "pet"?
The definition of a pet in this contest is a live animal that you currently own (or one that you have obtained the permission from the current owner to use). The photo of your pet will not be accepted if it is a stuffed animal, wild animal or zoo animal.

Can I submit a photo of a friend's pet or does the pet have to belong to me?
It's fine by us if you submit a photo you've taken of someone else's pet as long as that someone else (the owner) is willing to sign a photo release allowing you to use said picture in this competition. (It's their pet, after all.) In short: No random, wild or unclaimed critter photos accepted.

I just want to say that I'm so excited about this contest. I have 4 cats, a min pin and a lizard. I have tons of funny pics of them. So of coarse it's hard to decide which is best. But I must say I would be so proud to go into a hallmark store and see one of my babies on a card. I'd probubly buy a bunch and send them to everyone I know. A prize wouldnt matter to me, it's prize enough that they made it onto the greeting card. Thanks for giving us an chance to do something like this.

Wow! I never knew how hard it was to catch a giraffe and try to hold it on your lap! Oops...gotta go!

Call me stupid but where exactly is Hallmark located that the winner will be flown to?I cannot find any references pertaining to that...Also does doggy get his own seat or is he forced to be put into cargo. The safety factor of that bothers me...Anybody?

RE: Miko, "Where's Hallmark?" It's in Kansas City, MO. There are offices downtown in Crown Center and publishing & more offices in a northern suburb, Liberty, MO.
